Half Spaces

What Is It?
Half spaces are the two vertical channels on a football pitch situated between the central corridor and the wide flank areas.
In Simple Terms
Think of them as those dangerous attacking zones that are not quite in the middle of the pitch, and not quite out on the wing.
Why Top Teams Use It
Exploiting half spaces creates superior attacking angles, forces opposition defenders into difficult decisions about who to mark, and often opens up space in other areas of the pitch.
Two Ways to See It
Data Lens
Analysis might show a higher concentration of key passes, progressive passes received, and shots taken from these specific zones compared to wider or purely central areas. Teams with high activity in half spaces often generate a greater xG per possession sequence.
Scout Lens
A scout observes players who naturally drift into these areas to receive the ball between the lines, disrupting the opposition's defensive shape. It highlights how these positions force a fullback to either leave the wing or a center-back to step out, creating gaps for other attackers.

Spot It During a Match
Watch for attacking midfielders or inverted wingers receiving the ball or making runs in the zones just inside the opposing fullbacks or wing-backs.
