What Is It?
xGOT (Expected Goals on Target) measures the probability a shot will result in a goal, given that it hits the target, considering its specific trajectory and placement.
In Simple Terms
It tells you how good a shot was and how difficult it was for the goalkeeper to save, once the shot is actually on its way to the net.
Why Top Teams Use It
Teams use xGOT to assess player finishing ability and shot placement independent of initial shot selection, helping identify players who consistently make shots harder for goalkeepers to save. It also provides a benchmark for goalkeeper performance against high-quality attempts.
Two Ways to See It
Data Lens
Data analysts compute xGOT values by feeding shot location on the goal, speed, and trajectory into a model. A high xGOT indicates a shot that, once on target, was very likely to result in a goal, helping differentiate true finishing skill from luck or poor goalkeeping.
Scout Lens
A scout might observe a forward whose shots consistently 'sting' the goalkeeper's hands or are just out of reach, regardless of whether they go in. This visual assessment of consistent, high-quality striking and placement, even in missed chances, corresponds to strong xGOT numbers.
