Gegenpressing — overview

Gegenpressing

A Ballity concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

Gegenpressing is a tactical approach where a team, immediately after losing possession, aggressively presses the opponent in an attempt to win the ball back high up the pitch.
The moment your team loses the ball, everyone nearby instantly swarms the opponent to try and get it back right away.
Gegenpressing — shape
Top teams use it to regain possession in dangerous areas, exploit disorganized opponents, and create rapid scoring opportunities before the opposition can set up their defence.

Two Ways to See It

Data Lens

A Data Lens would reveal high numbers in metrics like 'high turnovers' and a typically lower 'PPDA' (Passes Per Defensive Action), indicating intense defensive pressure applied close to the opponent's goal. Teams using this tactic frequently register more ball recoveries in the final third.

Scout Lens

A Scout Lens focuses on the collective intensity and individual decision-making, noting how players anticipate lost possession and immediately transition from attack to defence. Key observations include the speed of collective pressing triggers and the stamina required for continuous high-energy actions throughout a match.

Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool, Julian Nagelsmann's RB Leipzig, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, Ralf Rangnick
Watch for multiple players converging instantly on the opponent who has just gained possession, often deep in the attacking half.
