Deep Completions — overview

Deep Completions

A Ballity concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

Deep Completions refer to successful passes completed by a team in dangerous areas close to the opposition's goal, typically within or around the penalty box.
It's all about making passes in those crucial areas near the opponent's goal that lead to big chances.
Deep Completions — shape
Top teams prioritize deep completions as they directly correlate with creating high-quality scoring opportunities, bypassing defensive blocks, and increasing their Expected Goals (xG).

Two Ways to See It

Data Lens

From a data perspective, deep completions are quantified by tracking successful passes in predefined high-value zones, often within 18-20 yards of the goal, directly contributing to a team's xG chain and offensive threat metrics. They highlight a team's ability to consistently penetrate defensive structures and deliver the ball into critical areas for shot creation.

Scout Lens

A scout observes players' spatial awareness and passing vision to execute these difficult passes under pressure, noting how certain individuals can consistently 'unlock' defenses with incisive through balls or cutbacks into the box. It's about identifying the composure and technique required to make these match-winning deliveries.

Manchester City, Barcelona (under Pep Guardiola), Liverpool, Kevin De Bruyne, Lionel Messi
Watch for passes played into the penalty area, especially into central zones, that immediately put a teammate in a position to shoot or create a dangerous situation.

⚽️ Kick-off time: 5pm local/10am AEST/1am BST/8pm EDT ⚽️ Player guide | Bracketology | Golden Boot | Mail Beau Through four games, Belgium have retained 57% of possession with a 65% field tilt – a possession metric weighing only final-third touches – but haven’t found a way to maximize that advantage. While possession can be a noisy statistic, viewing it in stylistic terms can be informative. So far at this World Cup, Belgium have won the possession battle in all four of their games, with Senegal playing them closest in a 52-48 split. The United States have maintained a 58% share of the ball in their four games, neck-and-neck with Garcia’s Belgium.
